Attendance
September 8, 2009
Dear Parents/Guardians:
As you know, school attendance is a top priority in ensuring the academic success of our students. Truancy and tardiness greatly impact the success of all students. Students who are frequently absent or tardy miss important classroom instruction, often times making it difficult for students to perform at their personal best. Teachers and students who arrive to class on time are also impacted by the late arrivers. As a result, the staff at West Campus High School will diligently enforce the Sacramento City Unified School District attendance policy.
The policy, provided here as a PDF document, provides a flowchart that outlines the steps that will be taken to improve academic achievement by improving student attendance. The flowchart states the following:
- The 1 st attendance letter will be sent home after 3 days or 18 periods of unexcused absences, unverified absences, or tardies over 30 minutes.
- The 1 st attendance letter will also be sent home after 10 days of excused absences if no doctor verification is provided on the 11 th day. This includes consecutive and non-consecutive absences.
- The 2 nd attendance letter will be sent home after one additional truant day or 6 periods of unexcused tardies over 30 minutes.
- The 3 rd attendance letter will be sent home after one additional truant day or 6 periods of unexcused tardies over 30 minutes. In addition, an appointment for a SART conference will be scheduled.
- In regards to tardies under 30 minutes, all students involved in a tardy sweep will be required to serve one day of lunch detention. The detention will take place the day following the tardy sweep.
It is important to understand that these steps are necessary for the good of our students. The behaviors and patterns that are established at a younger age will most likely carry over into adulthood. Let us teach our students to be prompt and responsible individuals.
Sincerely,
Mr. Thomas
Principal
